Ring Road Markets

Ring Road is the social, if not geographical, centre of the Ancient City. It is where people go to get lost, get found and get everything between. Ring Road is also famous for its many markets that you can hardly tell apart because of how connected they are but if you are looking for a guide to get specialized items in Ring Road, then this post is for you.

Here are 5 Ring Road markets you should absolutely check out when you’re in Benin City.

Forestry Market

If you do not want to be a mechanic this year, but a baller, Forestry is where you go to prepare for the drip. You cannot pass through Forestry without hearing “na shirt? na jeans? madam, na shoe? na bag? oga, na boxers?” And you can bet your left eye that whatever you’re looking for, you will find it there.

While looking good is good business, in Forestry, it is also expensive business. So do not be too surprised when that nice stonewashed jeans you were eyeing turns out to be your dream life savings.

Yanga Market

Depending on where you are coming from, Yanga Market is before or after Oba Market. If that wasn’t helpful, I don’t know what it. Just know it is sha close to Oba Market.

Anyway, this Ring Road market is your go-to for local seafood. You will find different kinds of fresh catfish, shrimp and whatever you want. Well, not really whatever you want, don’t go asking for oysters or mussels, be normal, please. The good thing is the prices at this market, unlike its name might suggest, are actually reasonable.

Oba Market

At Oba Market, or Eki-Oba, you can shop for anything, ranging from cosmetics, fashion accessories, and all kinds of foodstuff. You can also shop for fresh food and clothes in this market. You can even find tailors and hairdressers.

For some reason, this market cannot seem to decide if it is an open market. Its closely cluttered shops form a wall that covers the market from the outside view. This particular quality, however, distinguishes the King’s market from others.

Lagos Street Market

Lagos Street is a market opposite Oba Market. It is a place for hair extensions and cosmetics, and all kinds of plastic. You can also get a lot of random things like keys, pots, locks and what have you.

If you don’t like being brushed by strangers in public, first of all, go seek help because be for real. But in the meantime, also avoid this market because there’s is so much human traffic, even vehicles have a hard time passing through.

Mission Road

There’s really nothing you will not find on Mission Road if you are setting up a home (well done oh, in this economy) or you just want to do monthly shopping (again, well done), this is the market for you.

You will find everything from provisions and foodstuff to plastic and every kind of home utensil all at a very cheap price. This Ring Road market is sha your plug for almost everything, including electronics and the best the Okrika market has to offer.

Ring Road Market: Notable Mention

The one along Shuttle Road, Ibiwe and Ebo street where you will find the best stationeries, shoes and boutiques. Don’t just wear a red shirt there, otherwise, you will think the Intercom ad they made years ago is referring to you.
