Surviving Benin: 5 Things You Need to Know

Everyone who has lived in Benin City can tell you that it is a mad place. But there is a method to its madness. So if you are planning to visit or even move to the Ancient City, here are 5 things you should know about surviving Benin City:

Get Umbrella/Raincoat/Rainboot

Don’t just get them though, always have them in your bag because the rain in Benin City is a respecter of no man. Just because you stepped out on a bright and beautiful day, does not mean it won’t start raining cats and dogs some hours later without any warning. Even if it doesn’t rain, the sun in Benin City is enough to boil yam and prepare owo soup, just dey play.

Learn to Insult in Pidgin

You can never go wrong with some “Ogun dey kee you?” and “your papa” in your daily vocabulary. Everyone is hot-tempered here and if your appear too cool-headed, you are bound to see some shege. There’s a caveat here though: if you know you don’t have power to exchange blows, it is better you temper insults with common sense; don’t insult anybody who will send you to the great beyond, use wisdom.

Call Every Elderly Man Epa and Every Elderly Woman Iye

Like most African communities, people in Benin City like to present a semblance of respect for their elders. Whether or not you feel that way, do as they do. Call that old man you see epa (father) and that old woman Iye (mother). It might save your life, besides, it takes nothing from you.

If You Hear “Heyss, Dey With Me” Run for Your Life

Don’t say we did not warn you oh. If you hear “heysss” don’t wait for anything else, except you like to be a charity and like parting with your valuables. This is especially applicable if you live near a university’s campus, where the senior men often reside.

If You’re Lost, Just Find Your Way to Ring Road

Trust me, you will be found. Ring Road is the centre of Benin, and you will certainly find a way to your destination from there. You can also be normal and just ask someone around as the rest of us do.

Benin City is a colourful place where there’s never a dull moment. And despite what we’ve said, Benin City can be a safe and comfortable city to live in. We know this is not a comprehensive list and would love to hear from you. What other tips would you add? Comment below.
