Heartbreak in Benin

Heartbreak can be such a terrible thing, but heartbreak in Benin by Edo people is a whole ‘nother thing. It will leave you falling sick and wishing to die, but like all things, time will heal you no matter what.

Here are three heart-wrenching accounts of heartbreak in the Ancient City. Read below:

We Seemed Like a Good Fit

Ivie shares her story about a cheating and lying boyfriend who didn’t know what he wanted until he rightly lost it.

His name was Osaro. We met because our closest friends were friends and so we started talking. he asked me out and we seemed like a good fit but the week we started dating, I saw that he deleted his chats because I was coming over. In the one chat I saw, he admitted to lying to me about the last time he had sex to his friend. I confronted him and he apologized saying it was just banter. I didn’t completely believe him but he decided to commit to getting me back, he was sweet and we talked every day so I trusted him again.

After 3 months of this, he suddenly decided he didn’t want to be in a relationship with me anymore and he wasn’t “ready” to be not single. all signs pointed to the fact that he cheated. Everything happened in four months give or take. I have gotten over the breakup but my eyes cleared and I realized men ain’t sh*t.

If I had the chance to do something to him I won’t do anything TBH, I don’t care that much. Besides, him trying to get me back over a stretch of 2 years and me telling him no was satisfactory enough

I Was a Virgin

Ricky’s university love story is a touching tale of a year-long relationship gone sour as he had to come to terms with the fact that the person he loved might have outgrown him or, worse still, set her eyes on other things:

So I was on my own, when Esther started gumming body with me in 100L. My friends will be telling me this girl likes you but I just thought she wanted friendship.

I used to live off campus and one night, Esther came by. At this time, I was a virgin and I used to think everyone else was too. Esther used to act like she does not know anything too so I never reasoned anything about her coming over. It wasn’t the first time she was visiting. But unlike the other times, Esther refused to go home when it was getting dark.

She was sleeping on my bed and I thought she must be very tired and like a gentleman, I decided to sleep on the cold floor so nobody will say one thing happened. Long story short, me and Esther had sex that night. She initiated it and I won’t lie, I didn’t think I would get lucky at that time.

Soon we became an item and everything was rosy. She used to cook for me and stuff sef. We used to have fun regularly, you know, sex and sex-adjacent stuff. This continued for most of our 100l. Sometime during the end of the academic year, me and Esther fought. It was one unbelievably silly thing that caused it but we reconciled later sha.

Before 200L, Esther texted me to say we should break up. I asked her why she didn’t reply or pick all my calls. At some point she even blocked me. Immediately after the breakup, I was worried. I thought her parents had somehow found out and forced her to break up.

The new semester, Esther had become a full babe. She was no longer the SU-in-public-freak-in-the-sheet girl I knew. She was now a reigning babe with iPhone sef. Till we graduated, she pretended like she did not know me. If I see her today, I’d do nothing. I wish she had sat down with me to say why she was breaking up but now, I’m cool with her decision

He Was Hot and Very Cool

A girl has a relationship with her dream man, and while most of their relationship had been over chat, it felt real to her. Little did Nancy know that her dream man had other ideas about where their relationship will go. His plans could not have been more nightmarish. Her heartbreak story is giving everything it should and more:

It was in 2018 when I met Royal. I fell in love immediately. He was hot and very cool. He had this deep baritone voice that used to do me somehow. We dated for a few months. Most of our relationship was over WhatsApp chats as he was always busy and I couldn’t sleep over because I was still under my father’s roof.

Anyway, one Friday like that, my parents went for a burial at Auchi, they’d not be back till the next morning. I decided to risk it and visit Royal. We had so much fun that night ehn. He had a banging body, the type I used to fantasize about as I read those Harlequin. Anyway, we had sex, and even though I was not a virgin, I’d had sex a couple of times with boys my age, but this one was different. He was adventurous and ready to do different positions. I felt I’d met my husband. I even thought this was a man I could get disowned for.

Las las, it turned out it was just my mumu body that was thinking rubbish. After that night, things changed. Royal was too busy to even see for 10 minutes. For a while, I felt used but I’ve gotten over it. He recently got married and I’m happy to report that his wife is very ugly. He himself isn’t that fine, I don’t know what I saw before.

When we broke up I nearly died, I felt like garbage. I felt like a stupid fool because is that not the oldest trick in the book I’d fallen for? I’ve since gotten over the breakup. I’ve even dealt my own share of heartbreak to them boys, especially those Ishan devils, LOL. If I had the chance to do something to him, I’ll pay for the cosmetic surgery his children will need. Cos they ain’t gonna be pretty, that’s for sure
